Many of the Amazon and eBay oils are NOT genuine even if they are labeled as Young Living. Be careful. These can be not only ineffective, but could actually pose a legitimate danger to you and your family. Please only buy direct from an approved Young Living Distributor.
But as for the stuff in stores, there are retail products in natural health stores and big box chains, and yes, they are much cheaper. They are cheaper for a reason. True therapeutic grade oils MUST be derived from organically grown or wildcrafted plants. These oils MUST be steam distilled at certain pressures or pressed and stored in the correct manner. Things can not be added or taken away for you to receive the true therapeutic qualities. If plants are grown commercially with pesticides, herbicides, and chemicals to cut down on the agricultural cost, or distilled at too high a pressure this changes the chemistry of what you are purchasing for your body. Over the counter essential oils are produced in a way that cuts down on processing time, they can be extracted with chemical solvents to squeeze out more product, and most are not approved to ingest. There is no guarantee of where the original plants are sourced from.
Don’t let a label fool you. The government approved "Organic" labeling has become broad in terms of definition. No government agency has defined the term “therapeutic”, and no agency regulates the content of labels on essential oils in a way that would remedy any deception. You can find oils that labels will say 100% pure, organic, and natural, and wait for it…some may even say therapeutic grade. WITH YOUNG LIVING OILS, THESE STATEMENTS ARE ABSOLUTELY THE CASE. With other brands, we encourage you to go online and find any information about their plant sourcing, farming practices, or distillation processes. You won't find it.
You CAN NOT ingest many essential oils put out by other companies because they have “ADDED” synthetic compounds to enhance the aroma of the oils. The natural aroma was lost because when using a HIGH pressure distillation, the aroma is compromised, along with the therapeutic qualities. So basically, if the oil is lavender, they add a compound to make it “smell” more like lavender.
Over 90% of the oils that are sold as “essential” in America are food or fragrance grades and are NOT suitable for wellness applications.
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.
LOOK AT IT THIS WAY - if you simply want essential oils to make your house smell good, then cheap oils will do that for you. If you have the desire to achieve therapeutic and life changing benefits, not so much. Candles will make your house smell nice, but you probably wouldn't expect them to be effective at promoting wellness if you rubbed them on your skin, and you certainly wouldn't eat them to assist you in promoting your health. Enough said. *drops mic*
When the cost of our essential oils is seen as a challenge by our customers, I like to describe for them the work required to run farms around the world without using herbicides or other toxic chemicals.
It costs us around $12,000 per acre to weed our Mona, Utah lavender fields by hand, using manual labor. Do you know how much “weeding” costs other companies? $60.00 per acre. Spraying cheap (and toxic) herbicides is faster and much cheaper

Young Living is is the only essential oil company that owns their own farms or partners with farms that are willing to live up to their standards for growing, harvesting and distilling.
Essential oils sold in most health food stores are aroma-grade or fragrance-grade oils and while they do smell good, they don’t offer the same therapeutic and medicinal benefits. These oils may have an essential oil base, but may contain additives, fillers, and synthetics to increase volume or fragrance. Pure essential oils contain all desired therapeutic compounds – nothing more, nothing less.
Most essential oils have expiration dates, Young Living oils do not. 100% pure essential oils (excluding citrus) will last indefinitely if properly stored away from heat and sunlight.
Young Living has been producing the finest quality oils for over 20 years and with over 180 different oils they have the greatest selection of singles & blends of any essential oil company. But, if an oil doesn’t pass Young Living’s strict quality standards, they won’t offer it for sale so sometimes not all of these oils are available until they can produce more.
